What is 360° Product Photography?

360° product photography is the practice of capturing a product from many evenly-spaced angles and presenting the resulting image sequence as an interactive spin on the customer’s product page. This page explains what it is, when to use it, how it differs from traditional product photography, and how PhotoRobot’s robotic capture platform automates it at production scale.


The short answer

A 360° spin is a sequence of typically 24-60 photographs taken at evenly-spaced angles around a product (every 6-15 degrees). When presented in an interactive viewer on a website or app, the shopper can drag, click, or auto-rotate to see the product from any angle — as if holding it in their hand.

This contrasts with traditional product photography, where the product is presented as one or several static images (front, back, side). Static images don’t communicate three-dimensional shape, texture wrap, or hidden details on rotation.


How 360° product photography works

Step 1: Capture

The product sits on a rotating turntable. A camera fires the shutter at each angle as the turntable advances. For a 24-frame spin: 24 shutter fires, each at 15° intervals. For 60 frames: every 6°.

For automated systems like PhotoRobot, this entire sequence runs in 2-3 minutes per product without operator intervention beyond setup. Manual capture (turntable + tripod + manual shutter) takes 15-20 minutes per product and produces variable results.

Step 2: Edit

Captured frames go through standardized post-processing:

In PhotoRobot’s workflow, edits apply to the whole spin via edit presets — set once per product type, applied to every frame automatically.

Step 3: Publish

Edited frames are compressed (typically WebP at 65-75 quality), uploaded to a CDN, and embedded on the customer’s product page via a viewer (iframe or JavaScript SDK). The viewer lazy-loads frames as the user interacts.

Production-scale workflow

PhotoRobot’s CAPP integrates capture, edit, and export as a production line, not as independent stages. Most generic rigs capture only; the operator manually moves images into Photoshop, then manually uploads to the website. PhotoRobot’s pipeline eliminates the manual handoffs.

Cloud + viewer + integration ecosystem

PhotoRobot ships an end-to-end stack: capture → edit → export → cloud → viewer → API for downstream systems. Generic rigs typically end at “captured image files in a folder.”

Multi-channel viewer

Common questions

How many frames per spin?

24 frames (every 15°) is the most common default — visually smooth, manageable file size. 36 frames (every 10°) for finer rotation. 60+ frames (every 6° or less) for products where small geometry changes matter (sneaker silhouettes, complex hardware). More frames = more storage + more bandwidth, so don’t over-spec without reason.

Do I need 3D models too?

Optional. PhotoRobot supports glTF / OBJ + texture 3D model display alongside spins in the same viewer. For products where the user benefits from rotation + zoom + custom viewing angles, 3D adds value. For most products, 360° spin is sufficient and dramatically cheaper to produce.

How does file size compare to traditional product photography?

A typical 24-frame WebP spin at 800×800 pixels is ~700 KB total. For comparison, a single high-quality JPEG product photo is often 200-500 KB, and a typical product page already has 3-5 images plus marketing content totaling 2-5 MB. The spin adds ~700 KB to a page that’s already ~2 MB — meaningful but not disqualifying. Lazy loading means only the first frame loads until the user interacts.

What’s the conversion impact?

Published e-commerce studies and PhotoRobot customer data show 360° spins increase product page conversion 10-40% depending on product category. Fashion and footwear see the largest lift (visual products benefit most from interaction). Categories with low shape variation (commodity electronics, household basics) see smaller lift.

How does it work on mobile?

360° viewers handle touch drag natively. PhotoRobot’s viewer uses Intersection Observer to stop spinning when not visible (battery + data preservation on mobile). Default WebP quality 65-75 keeps mobile data costs reasonable.

Is it SEO-friendly?

Iframe-embedded viewer content is not indexed by search engines. Workarounds: add alt text + structured data on the host product page describing the product images. Use schema.org Product markup with image URLs pointing at the first-frame thumbnail. Drive SEO through host page metadata; let the viewer drive engagement post-click. See module B21 §10.
