Virtual Catwalk Specialist
PhotoRobot Catwalk is a combined motorized turntable + treadmill belt platform for on-model fashion photography + fashion video. The model walks on the belt while the platform rotates 360°; the cameras stay fixed; the result is a “flying camera” runway feel — produced in a 7 × 7 m studio space, with standard continuous studio lighting, dozens of outfits per day. This specialty teaches the operator’s craft: device, model, lighting, scenarios, post handoff.
What Catwalk is
The PhotoRobot Catwalk (sometimes called Virtual Catwalk) is specialty hardware in the PhotoRobot range — distinct from standard turntables (Centerless Table, Frame, Cube) and from Robotic Arm (which is a separate product for multi-row product spins). Catwalk consists of:
- A motorized rotating platform (Ø 2.8 m, AC 230 V, 1500 kg load)
- An integrated treadmill belt embedded in the platform (1–100 % speed, max 10 km/h)
- Mobile edge supports for model safety on entry + exit
- Standard PhotoRobot Controls software integration (same suite as the rest of the PhotoRobot range)
Two operating modes:
- Belt-on mode (catwalk feel) — model walks on belt, platform rotates, cameras roll continuously → fashion video + extracted stills with a “flying camera” runway effect
- Belt-off mode (RotoPower spin) — belt stationary, platform rotates 360°, model stands → standard 360° on-model spin; or a solid plate covers the belt + product is placed for standard 360° product spin
Both modes coexist in a single session — typically belt-on for runway video, then belt-off for 360° spin of the same outfit.
Catwalk is engineered for fashion throughput — PhotoRobot’s published material claims “dozens of models per day” with standard studio lighting. The Controls scenarios feature (saved belt + rotation choreography for reuse across outfits) is the productivity multiplier.
Why this track is its own specialty
Three things distinguish Catwalk from general PhotoRobot operation:
- The subject is a live person, not a product. Operator’s job is half device + half human. Pacing, dignity, safety on the moving platform, reading body language during rotation, stepping out of frame — these aren’t standard product photography skills.
- Continuous lighting, not strobes. Catwalk shoots video continuously while the platform rotates + the model walks. Strobes can’t keep up. Continuous studio lights (Fresnel + ARRI-style + FOMEI-style stilllights) — what any well-equipped fashion studio already owns — are the norm. Different exposure discipline, different calibration discipline, different fabric-rendering discipline.
- Output is video-first (with extracted stills). Standard PhotoRobot 360 product workflow is stills-first. Catwalk’s deliverable mix (catwalk motion video + 360 spin + key-frame stills + VR/AR plates) reshapes the entire pipeline from capture through post through delivery.
The Virtual Catwalk Specialist track exists because these differences are substantial enough that an Operator who’s great at static product photography still needs explicit training before running a Catwalk session reliably.
What you’ll learn
After completing the Virtual Catwalk Specialist package and passing the certification exam, you will be able to:
- Operate Catwalk end-to-end — device + Controls + two-mode workflow (belt-on / belt-off) + RotoPower mode for static rotation
- Communicate with live models during a fashion session — pre-session briefing, entry choreography, body-language reading, pause / stop / emergency-stop discipline, operator-vs-creative-director lane discipline
- Set up continuous studio lighting for motion — Fresnel + soft panel + open-face 3-light scheme, colour temperature calibration across fixtures, exposure for video (cinema shutter rule), fabric-specific handling
- Build + use Controls scenarios — saved belt + rotation choreography reusable across outfits; library of slow / brisk / pose-spin / walk-pause-walk / reverse-return patterns
- Hand off to post-production cleanly — folder structure, metadata, take notes, color-checker captures, deliverable format awareness per customer channel
- Close out sessions per Operator Standard discipline applied to Catwalk specifics
The track is technical + human + workflow — three skill layers that come together at the Catwalk station.
What’s included
The Virtual Catwalk Specialist package contains 4 modules plus an end-of-package certification exam.
Virtual Catwalk track (SPVC## namespace — slugs retained for URL stability; titles reflect actual Catwalk scope)
- SPVC01 — Catwalk Device + Workflow Concepts ~75 min. What Catwalk is, hardware components (platform + belt + supports + Controls integration), the two-mode workflow (belt-on flying-camera + belt-off RotoPower), scenarios feature, technical parameters, installation modes (sunk vs free-standing), where Catwalk fits in a fashion studio + anti-patterns + cross-device routing.
- SPVC02 — Working with Live Models on Catwalk ~75 min. Why a human-side module exists separately; pre-session briefing; entry choreography; belt-on choreography (start + walk + end); belt-off + mode switching; reading the model (body language + check-ins + pause honour); operator lane vs creative-team lane; safety + emergency stop + post-event recovery.
- SPVC03 — Continuous Studio Lighting for Catwalk Motion ~75 min. Why continuous (not strobe) for Catwalk; three light families (Fresnel / open-face / soft panel); basic 3-light setup for rotating platform; colour temperature calibration across multi-fixture setup; exposure for motion (shutter / aperture / ISO); fabric handling for common materials; failure diagnosis + fixes.
- SPVC04 — Catwalk Scenarios + Post-Production + Delivery ~60 min. Controls “scenarios” feature (the productivity multiplier); building scenario library; capture-time workflow with scenarios; four primary deliverables (video, 360 spin, key-frame stills, VR/AR plates); post pipeline + operator handoff role; delivery formats per customer channel; session closeout per Operator Standard discipline.
Each module includes a textbook (reference reading), a workbook (exercises grounded in real Catwalk scenarios), and a knowledge check quiz.
How the package is delivered
Two delivery formats — online standalone is not offered because Catwalk skills (model communication, lighting choreography, scenario execution) require live equipment work.
At PhotoRobot studio (Klecany)
Group training in PhotoRobot’s training studio with Catwalk installed. 2-day intensive:
- Day 1: SPVC01 (device) + SPVC02 (model communication) classroom + 60-min model + entry choreography role-play
- Day 2: SPVC03 (lighting) classroom + 60-min lighting practical + SPVC04 (scenarios + post handoff) classroom + 45-min Controls scenarios drill
PhotoRobot Klecany has Catwalk + continuous lighting kit + Controls + sample wardrobe pre-configured for the practical blocks.
In your studio (post-installation)
PhotoRobot Certified Instructor travels to customer’s site. 3-day on-site:
- Day 1: SPVC01 + SPVC02 with customer’s actual Catwalk installation + your model agency contact + your studio’s lighting kit
- Day 2: SPVC03 with your fixtures + your typical customer wardrobe categories + your typical brief patterns
- Day 3: SPVC04 with your Controls setup + your post pipeline + role-play customer revision scenarios
Best when Catwalk is a strategic capability you’re adding (paired with hardware deployment + business development).
Online — not available
Catwalk-specific skills (model communication on a moving platform, lighting choreography under continuous illumination, scenario execution + customer hand-off) need live equipment + a stand-in model. Module textbooks are available as reference reading; the cert exam requires hands-on session completion verified by PhotoRobot Certified Instructor.
Certification
After completing all modules + hands-on practice, students take the PhotoRobot Virtual Catwalk Specialist certification exam:
- 30 questions drawn from a pool weighted across the modules (SPVC02 + SPVC03 carry slightly more weight — model communication + lighting are the operationally dense modules)
- 70 % pass threshold
- 60 minutes
- Scenario-heavy — most questions present a Catwalk session situation requiring judgment + procedure recall
- Hands-on completion required — cert exam is not standalone; student must complete instructor-verified hands-on session (Klecany or in-studio) before exam access
- 2 years validity — refresh exam available at the 2-year mark
The exam slug is virtual-catwalk-specialist-cert (URL stability). Display title is “Virtual Catwalk Specialist”. Quiz pool content rewrite to match the new module framing lands in v0.45.4 (separate bump after this v0.45.3 module rewrite).
Who should take it
The Virtual Catwalk Specialist track is for:
- Operators at fashion-oriented PhotoRobot studios running or planning Catwalk-equipped sessions
- Studio Managers scoping Catwalk-based engagements with apparel / footwear / accessory brands
- PhotoRobot Certified Instructors delivering the Virtual Catwalk track to customer sites
- PhotoRobot pre-installation team members preparing Catwalk units in Klecany + supporting customer onboarding
It is not for:
- Studios without Catwalk hardware (no equipment = no delivery capability; cert would be theoretical)
- Pure 2D static photographers without motion-content customer demand
- Operators without Operator Standard + Studio Manager Essentials prerequisites (dual prereq enforced — Catwalk adds depth, doesn’t substitute foundation)
- Studios without a model + agency relationship (Catwalk needs models; product-only studios can still buy Catwalk + use it in belt-off RotoPower mode, but the specialty track is overkill for product-only use)
Prerequisites
Required (both):
- PhotoRobot Certified Operator (current) — capture-side fluency, lighting basics
- PhotoRobot Certified Studio Manager Essentials (current) — workflow + customer coordination discipline
Required (equipment):
- PhotoRobot Catwalk installed in the studio where the cert will be applied — PhotoRobot Sales verifies installation before voucher issuance
- Continuous studio lighting kit (3+ fixtures from Fresnel / open-face / soft panel families — typically present in any fashion studio)
- Camera capable of video at 25/30/50/60 fps
Helpful:
- Existing model + agency relationships (Catwalk needs models)
- Fashion industry context (apparel vocabulary, runway feel, brand campaign cadence)
- Basic video post-production familiarity (Premiere / DaVinci Resolve at user level — you don’t need to be an editor, but should follow post language)
- A live customer engagement where Catwalk would apply (training is most useful grounded in a real upcoming project)
If you don’t yet have the foundational certs, complete Operator Standard + Studio Manager Essentials first. If your studio doesn’t have Catwalk, enrollment is gated until installation is verified — contact PhotoRobot sales.
Enrollment
This package is equipment-gated. PhotoRobot sales verifies your studio’s Catwalk installation before issuing the voucher code. Each voucher is single-use, per-student.
For per-student pricing at Klecany or custom on-site engagement pricing, contact PhotoRobot sales.
Customers without Catwalk: PhotoRobot sales can scope bundled engagements (Catwalk hardware + installation + initial Virtual Catwalk training) for studios adding this capability. The cert track is a downstream credential; the hardware is the upstream gate.
After certification
The Virtual Catwalk Specialist credential opens:
- Production Catwalk project leadership at fashion engagements — own the motion-content portion of a complex apparel catalog rollout
- Cross-specialty stacking — pair with 3D Modeling Specialist (apparel 3D + motion video for AR / VR / mixed-reality experiences). (Note: PINK Specialist is a device-specific operator track for clinics running the PINK system and doesn’t stack with Catwalk.)
- PhotoRobot Certified Instructor (CI) path to deliver Virtual Catwalk training at other PhotoRobot-equipped studios (once you have ~5+ production Catwalk projects shipped)
- PhotoRobot Partner Network listing as a certified Virtual Catwalk Specialist (high-visibility credential — Catwalk-equipped studios are still a niche specialty with strong customer demand signal in fashion-brand circles)
The cert is the entry point. Real Catwalk mastery comes from shipping 5-10 production projects across different garment types + brand contexts — building scenario library, refining lighting per brand identity, finding the per-customer workflow that fits.

Quiz pool rewrites + cert exam + refresh exam content rewrite land in v0.45.4 (separate bump). Until then the quiz infrastructure is still serving prior content that will be replaced.
A critical note on scope
The Virtual Catwalk Specialist track teaches the operator side of Catwalk. It does NOT teach fashion creative direction, model casting / agency relationships, or video post-production craft beyond capture handoff discipline.
What the Specialist owns (PhotoRobot teaches):
- Catwalk device operation (both modes)
- Patient communication on the device + dignity-first session pacing
- Continuous studio lighting setup + calibration
- Scenarios (build, maintain, use during sessions)
- Capture-to-post handoff with proper metadata + organisation
- Session closeout per Operator Standard discipline
What others own (NOT PhotoRobot Academy’s scope):
- Creative direction (campaign concept, pose direction, brand aesthetic)
- Model casting + agency relationship management
- Stylist work + costume preparation
- Hair / makeup
- Music selection + sound design for delivered videos
- Color grading craft + LUT building
- Editing motion videos for final delivery
- Customer creative review + brand-side approval workflows
The Specialist works alongside a creative team. The clearer the lane, the smoother every Catwalk session runs.
A note on equipment gating
Virtual Catwalk Specialist is equipment-gated alongside Carpet Photography Specialist (v0.40.0). Reasoning:
- No Catwalk = no delivery capability. A certified Specialist without Catwalk cannot run Catwalk sessions for customers. The cert would be theoretical credential.
- Sales coordination required. PhotoRobot sales verifies Catwalk installation before voucher issuance — prevents wasted enrollment from studios that wouldn’t be able to apply the training.
- Bundled engagement option. Studios planning to add the capability can negotiate hardware + training as a package via sales.
Different gating pattern than the foundational tracks (Operator, Studio Manager, Integrator) which are role-based, not equipment-based.
A note on Catwalk vs live runway video vs other PhotoRobot products
Common confusion points worth flagging:

Catwalk ≠ live runway video. Catwalk simulates the runway feel in a 7 × 7 m studio space with reproducible scenarios. Live runway is actual model walking at actual venue with event production. Different products entirely; PhotoRobot is the Catwalk side.

Catwalk ≠ PhotoRobot Robotic Arm. Robotic Arm is a separate PhotoRobot device for multi-row product spins (camera moves around a stationary product to add the 3rd dimension to 360 photography). Catwalk’s cameras stay fixed; the platform + belt move the subject. Earlier (now-replaced) versions of this module incorrectly framed Catwalk as a “robotic arm” workflow — that was factually wrong + has been corrected.

Catwalk’s belt-off RotoPower mode ≠ a standard PhotoRobot turntable. Same shape (rotating platform), but the platform is much wider (Ø 2.8 m, designed for a standing human) than a product turntable. Belt-off Catwalk works for on-model 360° spin + can be used for large objects (furniture, large bags) with the belt covered. For routine product 360°, a standard turntable (Centerless Table, Frame, Cube) is more cost-effective.
